Sarah is a delightful woman who is 31 years old and has been served by the GAPS program since 2000.  At that time, Sarah was living in a nursing home.  GAPS did not feel that this was an appropriate home and was unduly restrictive.  GAPS immediately started advocating on Sarah’s behalf that she be able to move into a community group home where she would be able to receive the services she deserved and desired.

In November of 2005,  Sarah was able to move into a medical group home in Clackamas County. In 2004, Sarah was matched with her friend and advocate, Mary Owings. Mary also played a part in advocating for Sarah to move into a community home.  Mary has enriched Sarah’s life in many ways, from decorating her room to including her in her church services and activities.  Sarah now has the opportunity to have more choices in her life which will help her to be happier and healthier.

GAPS

The Arc of Multnomah - Clackamas's Guardianship, Advocacy and Planning Services, otherwise known as GAPS, was started in 1978 by a group of parents concerned about the future well being and safety of their children. Since then, GAPS has been providing advocacy, guardianship and healthcare representative services to adults with developmental disabilities as well as providing information about future planning, wills and trusts to families planning for the future of their children with disabilities.

Working in cooperation with The Arc of Oregon, The Arc of Multnomah - Clackamas serves 31 adults with developmental disabilities in Multnomah and Clackamas Counties. The local coordinator receives support from the director of the GAPS program, the GAPS board and volunteers matched with GAPS clients.

The GAPS program serves over 100 people in 15 counties statewide.
