Obtaining successful outcomes for adults with developmental disabilities is common but requires planning, self-determination, understanding and time. Historically, many older people with developmental disabilities have never received adequate services by public programs, although most have been institutionalized because of their disability.

Lavern and her brother, Harry, have been living independently for over 20 years. What’s surprising about this? Both are in their 80’s, both have with significant cognitive disabilities and both have long histories of institutionalization.

Nevertheless, through the unrelenting advocacy of their Case Coordinator, Bill West, they have been able to navigate through the constantly changing galaxy of professionals and services. Without Bill’s support, they may have lost their independence this past year due to such changes, which are affecting all elderly people with developmental disabilities.
